Under general supervision, drives and operates various types of motor vehicles and other automotive equipment in connection with construction and maintenance operations.

The Truck Driver differs from other job codes which may drive trucks in the course of performing duties in that driving is the principal duty of this job code.

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Drives and operates trucks in pulling trailers, as well as pulling and operating compressors and pumps which involves using safety chains and the operation of power lift gates.

2. Drives and operates sweepers as well as maintaining and changing brooms and making sure the unit is lubricated daily.

3. Drives and operates semi-trailers which haul bulldozers and drives snow removal equipment (Hetch Hetchy) and other pieces of equipment as well as winch trucks which have power take-up units.

4. Drives dump trucks with power take-up units which are used to haul brush, garbage, and sand and dispenses materials at dump site.

5. Operates multiple-unit tractor mowers and drives equipment in connection with the maintenance of grounds and athletic fields.

6. Operates street flushing and mounted air compressor equipment which involves loading water, operating auxiliary pumps, and adjusting sprayers.

7. Loads and unloads heavy equipment (such as various types of earth-moving equipment) and construction materials such as aggregates and waste.

8. Insures that loads are properly and safely secured.

9. Cleans and does light maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking oil, tires, and fluid levels, and changing fuses.

10. Operates two-way radio for information and safety.

11. Prepares in writing a variety of reports such as daily reports which list driving activity, accident reports, maintenance reports, and monthly summaries and may perform office tasks including making routine purchases of materials and supplies.

12. Performs required DOT (Department of Transportation) and CHP (California Highway Patrol) inspections and completes appropriate forms.

Knowledge of: Laws, ordinances, and safety regulations (city, state, and federal) pertaining to driving and operating various types of motor vehicles and other automotive equipment; basic mechanics.

Ability to: Drive trucks and heavy equipment; load and unload heavy and awkward equipment and materials; perform routine maintenance, checks, and inspections on vehicles and equipment; read maps and follow written and oral directions; communicate orally and in writing.

Experience: 1. Two years of verified experience as a truck driver using heavy construction equipment or other trucks over 26,000 pounds, such as winch trucks, semi-trailers, sweepers, multiple-unit tractor mowers, dump trucks, or other construction vehicles with power take-off units and/or lift gates.

2. A good driving record. An applicant will be considered a negligent driver (and therefore not qualified) if his/her driving record shows six or more violation points in the last twelve months, or eight or more violation points in the last twenty-four months, or ten or more violation points in the last thirty-six months.

Possession of a valid Class B or Class A driver license with current Medical Certificate.  License must have no restriction on driving vehicles with air brakes.

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
