Definition

Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in connection with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of mobile and stationary machinery, equipment and mechanical facilities; exercises work direction over a small group of subordinate mechanical craftsmen and servicemen engaged in such work; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for: explaining and carrying out existing maintenance and repair methods and procedures; preparing and maintaining ordinary operating and maintenance reports. Nature of work involves considerable physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body, including continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor accidents may be encountered.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. Supervises and participates in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a wide variety of automotive equipment and machinery.

2. Inspects and reviews mechanical maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered mobile equipment and machinery, stationary equipment and machinery to assure conformance with instructions and procedures.

3. Inspects equipment to be repaired for damage and malfunctions.

4. Makes arrangement for necessary repair work and works with subordinate mechanics in such repair work.

5. Performs emergency repair work on the plant premises and in the field when necessary.

6. Operates a wide variety of equipment and steel tools used in Utility mechanic repair work.

7. Maintains records pertaining to maintenance, repair and servicing activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires considerable knowledge of: the methods, materials, machinery, tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair and overhaul of a wide variety of mobile machinery and equipment of the mechanic machinist and blacksmith trades, particularly as related to mobile and stationary plant maintenance, overhaul and repair work; the operating and preventive maintenance requirement of such equipment.

Requires ability to: analyze malfunctions in mobile machinery and. equipment and make repairs if necessary.

Requires considerable skill in the use of a wide variety of shop tools, machinery and equipment in the trade.

Experience and Training

Requires completion of high school, supplemented by at least four years of journeyman level experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of automotive machinery and mechanical equipment, including substantial machine shop, blacksmithing and metal work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
