Definition

Under general supervision, performs duties of a skilled beautician in an institution; and performs duties as required. Requires responsibility for: following modern cosmetological procedures and methods; making continual personal contacts with patients. Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. Washes the hair of female patients by using dry or wet, shampooing techniques.

2. Cuts and/or trims women's hair; sets patients' hair by using bobby pins, finger waving solutions and other hair setting techniques; gives permanent waves.

3. Endeavors to encourage patients and restore proper attitude toward rehabilitation by their appearance through cosmetological methods.

4. May do manicuring work and engage other cosmetological procedures incidental to and part of a beautician's services.

5. Keeps the salon in clean and sanitary condition; maintains cosmetological supplies, and requisitions these as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires a thorough knowledge of: the modern methods, materials and equipment used in cosmetological work; methods of salon sanitation.

Requires the skill and ability to get along well with others and instill a feeling of confidence in others.

Experience and Training

Requires completion of the tenth grade, supplemented by successful completion of the curriculum in a school of cosmetology, licensed and accredited by the California State Board of Cosmetology.

Requires three years of experience as a licensed beautician or cosmetologist.

License or Certificate

 Requires possession of a license to practice cosmetology issued by the California State Board of Cosmetology.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
