THE JOB: Under direction, provides lead direction to Public Health Microbiologists and Laboratory Assistants, performs the more difficult microbiological and related biological and biochemical examinations, and does other work as required.
THE REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these would be:
Three years of experience performing duties, that would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and abilities, listed on Santa Cruz County's Public Health Microbiologist classification specification or its equivalent.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Public Health Microbiologist certificate issued by the California State Department of Health Services. A valid certificate of proficiency in dairy bacteriology and milk analysis issued by the California State Department of Food and Agriculture may be required and obtained during employment if necessary. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.
Include certificate title, number, issuing agency and expiration date on application.
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of accepted techniques, methods, and procedures for coordinating mycobacteriological, mycological, parasitological, serological, bacteriological, and virological examinations, including the more complex or specialized tests; equipment and terminology used in public health laboratories; safety and quality control measures; current trends and concepts of public health microbiology; and causes and methods of transmission of communicable diseases.
Ability to: Effectively provide lead direction and training to laboratory microbiologists and assistants; accurately perform, interpret, and report results of routine and more complex or specialized microbiological and biochemical examinations; maintain accurate records and reports; provide technical consultation to laboratory staff as well as to other health personnel and agencies; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the laboratory employees, other members of the medical staff and the public; research, develop, and evaluate laboratory testing procedures; set up and operate technical equipment; and observe and exercise appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
THE EXAMINATION: Your application will be reviewed to determine if you have met the education, experience and/or licensing requirements as stated on the job announcement. If you meet these criteria and are one of the best qualified, you may be required to compete in any combination of written, oral and/or performance examinations or a competitive evaluation of training and experience as described on your application. You must pass all components of the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The examination may be eliminated if there are ten or fewer qualified applicants. If the eligible list is established without the administration of the announced examination, the life of the eligible list will be six months, and your overall score will be based upon an evaluation of your application. If during those six months it is necessary to administer another examination for this job class, you will be invited to take the examination to remain on the eligible list.
