Definition

Under supervision, provide technical support on all platforms; operate a multi-partition electronic computer and related peripheral and auxiliary equipment; perform setup, configuration and installation of desktop workstations and peripheral equipment; install network equipment for local area networks and the County's wide area network; and perform other duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Computer Operations Technician I is the trainee level in the series. Incumbents initially work under close supervision learning and performing various functions related to scheduling, control, and quality assurance; operating a variety of auxiliary equipment; and assisting in other preparatory work used in processing data prior to and following transmittal to the computer.

Computer Operations Technician II is the first working level in the series. Incumbents perform a wide range of work assignments related to the collection, arrangement, review and control of input data scheduled for computer processing; and, under close supervision, perform input/output processing routines and learn to manage the computer using the console.

Computer Operations Technician III is the full journey level in the series. Incumbents process a wide variety of data through the computer with independence; investigate and correct system malfunctions including telecommunications; install and troubleshoot local/remote terminal subsystems and related equipment; setup and install network equipment for local area networks and wide area networks; setup, install and configure desktop workstations and peripheral equipment for customer departments; troubleshoot hardware errors; utilize network management software to troubleshoot network problems; staff departmental Help Desk which provides technical support to customer departments for hardware and software problems on all platforms; and orient or assist new or less experienced technicians and equipment users.

Computer Operations Technician IV is the advanced journey level in the series. Incumbents are the team leaders for each section and often work independently; research and correct the more complex system and auxiliary equipment malfunctions; oversee the operation of their section; and train new or less experienced technicians and equipment users.

Typical Tasks

Receives and reviews input data from user departments; prepares instructions and schedules for daily production runs; prepares the master schedule for computer runs; prepares magnetic tapes, paper stock, computer run instructions and control cards; arranges and runs daily backup and production jobs according to schedule; operates off-line equipment; prints, proofs and distributes reports to user departments; verifies and records computer generated warrants; review for quality, cleans and files magnetic tapes; off-loads jobs and entire nightly production onto magnetic media; maintains reports, manuals, and files; inventories forms and supplies; orders, receives and stores supplies; operates electronic computer equipment in processing data, record keeping and related business transactions; sets up equipment in accordance with program manuals and operating instructions; manipulates control switches to start and operate electronic equipment; observes console to detect exception items and makes adjustments to bypass or correct errors and machine stops; responds to system inquiries from user departments; performs diagnostic routines to determine cause of machine or program difficulties; keeps logs on machine utilization and reports on progress of assignments including operating difficulties; researches and correct complex system and equipment malfunctions referring to manuals and consulting with vendors and technical staff; monitors environmental conditions within the data center and responds to emergency situations; writes policies and procedures relating to data center operations; performs setup, configuration and installations of desktop workstations and peripherals in customer departments; installs network equipment for local area networks and wide area networks; and orients and trains less experienced technicians and user department staff.

Thorough knowledge of the above, plus:

Working knowledge of:

  • Job scheduling and priority setting procedures.
  • Local area network and wide area network troubleshooting and repair.
  • Setup, installation, and configuration of desktop workstations and peripheral equipment.
Ability to:

Computer Operations Technician I

  • Develop basic keyboard skills.
  • Learn to process a variety of materials by operating peripheral and auxiliary equipment.
  • Learn to apply coding and input procedures for computer processing.
  • Communicate effectively with user departments.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Perform moderately heavy physical work, which includes lifting items up to sixty pounds.
  • Work in confined/cramped body positions installing wiring.
  • Climb a ladder to work at elevations from 4-12 feet.
Computer Operations Technician II

The above, plus;

  • Perform difficult and varied clerical work involving judgment and requiring attention to details, speed and accuracy.
  • Maintain technical records and files related to computer processing operations.
  • Apply complex coding and input procedures for computer processing.
  • Prepare input materials, check for completeness and verify output data.
  • Read and interpret job processing instructions and other technician data.
  • Recognize errors and adept effective courses of action.
  • Learn to process data through a multi-partition electronic computer.
  • Learn to communicate effectively with operations and service personnel on technical matters.
Computer Operations Technician III

The above, plus;

  • Determine the causes of equipment malfunction and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Communicate effectively with other staff and service personnel on technical matters.
  • Install, maintain and repair terminal subsystem equipment.
  • Monitor the communications network and identify error and malfunction conditions. Computer
Operations Technician IV

The above, plus;

  • Train and review the work of less experienced technicians.
  • Revise job schedules as necessary to respond to operating conditions or modify priorities.
  • Utilize manuals and other resources to diagnose and solve more complex operational difficulties and hardware malfunctions in the communications network.

Training and Experience: Any combination of education and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Computer Operations Technician I One year experience performing clerical duties involving automated record keeping OR completion of nine (9) semester units of college level course work in computer operations.

Computer Operations Technician II One year experience equivalent to the class of Computer Operations Technician I OR equivalent to completion of an AA college degree in data processing.

Computer Operations Technician III One year experience equivalent to the class of Computer Operations Technician II.

Computer Operations Technician IV Two years experience equivalent to the class of Computer Operations Technician III.

Special Requirements, Conditions:

Background Investigation: Must pass a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting.

License Requirements: Possession of a valid California class C driver license, or the ability to provide suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.

Special Working Conditions: Availability to work in a 24-hour per day, 7 days per week operation. Work in an environment of constant equipment noise generated by computers, fans and blowers. Possibility of contact with unshielded electrical equipment; risk of shocks from working on high voltage equipment; exposure to charged equipment.
