Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (“MBV”) is part of the division Mercedes-Benz Vans of Daimler AG, Germany. It is a plant in South Carolina that assembles Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner, with headquarters in Charleston, SC. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.

 

Mercedes-Benz Vans announced in March 2015 that it will invest $500 million in construction of a new Sprinter production plant, in addition to an expansion of existing assembly operations. The new facility will be also located in Charleston, and will provide up to 1,300 jobs.  

 

More than 130,000 Sprinter have been assembled in Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the third largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany and the U.K.

 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

 

  • Assess and verify welded joints of entire vehicle body as defined by quality standards
  • Responsible for the control of the ultrasonic device and the test mode.
  • Conduct special audits without inspection plan specification    
    • Conduct ultrasonic inspection using ultrasonic probe according to quality standards for entire vehicle shell.
    • Conduct ultrasonic testing outside of normal test conditions in special cases
    • Conduct ultrasonic device testing to ensure proper function
    • Coordinate with maintenance to ensure the ultrasonic device’s proper function  
  • Use the ultrasonic tester to analyze spot-welded joints in reference to the inspection planProvide expert input to establish and modify testing plans.
  • Act as a consultant while working with other departments to establish ultrasonic test parameters (e.g. locations, quantity of points, and amplitude)
  • Document, communicate and troubleshoot unsatisfactory ultrasonic tests with the appropriate department; decide if a physical inspection (with peel and/or chisel) is necessary
  • Communicate any daily information and any other relevant events during change of shift Assist in the organization of teamwork
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement Program

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 5 years of relevant automotive production experience

 

-or-

  • Associate’s Degree in a technical trade (NDT, material sciences, welding technology, industrial technology, etc.) and 2 years relevant automotive production experience

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Extensive experience with non-destructive structural testing
  • Knowledge of sheet metal processing and data processing
  • Certified Radiographic Interpreter preferred
  • Certified Welding Inspector preferred

 

Previous spot-welding experience preferred
