Laser Welding Technician

 

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (“MBV”) is part of the division Mercedes-Benz Vans of Daimler AG, Germany. It is a plant in South Carolina that assembles Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner, with headquarters in Charleston, SC. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.

 

Mercedes-Benz Vans announced in March 2015 that it will invest $500 million in construction of a new Sprinter production plant, in addition to an expansion of existing assembly operations. The new facility will also be  located in Charleston, and will provide up to 1,300 jobs.   

 

More than 130,000 Sprinter have been assembled in Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the third largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany and the U.K.

 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Troubleshoot the laser welding or laser soldering systems   
    • Detect errors and defects on the laser head, pressure plate, seam tracking system, laser source, laser cooling system, wire feeders, and power supply
    • Conduct contamination analysis of the vehicle shell
    • Replace defective or contaminated components, and constantly conduct visual inspection of systems & parts
    • Ensure compliance with the quality requirements
    • Create test sheets and graphs based on error and defect data
  • Set up, change and optimize the laser welding process. Operate the complete welding system
  • Execute Preventative Maintenance
    • Organize component procurement for testing or adjustment within and outside of non-production times
    • Conduct maintenance and cleaning of all welding process components in relation to the robots
    • Test and control spare parts stock
    • Archive, retrieve and communicate data using the corresponding mass storage systems
  • Integrate new laser welding programs and coach coworkers 
  • Communication and reporting
  • Assist in the organization of teamwork
  • Participate in the Continuous Improvement Program  

 

Qualifications:

 

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s Degree in Photonics, Laser Technology, Robotic Welding, Welding Technology, Mechatronics or similar and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience  

-or-

  • Certified Robotic Arc Welder with a minimum of 2 years relevant laser experience

 

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of robotics, laser welding systems, welding, PLCs, optical control systems, industrial electronics, mechatronics, and metal processing
