Measurement Technician

  

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (“MBV”) is part of the division Mercedes-Benz Vans of Daimler AG, Germany. It is a plant in South Carolina that assembles Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner, with headquarters in Charleston, SC. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.

 

Mercedes-Benz Vans announced in March 2015 that it will invest $500 million in construction of a new Sprinter production plant, in addition to an expansion of existing assembly operations. The new facility will be also located in Charleston, and will provide up to 1,300 jobs.  

 

More than 130,000 Sprinter have been assembled in Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the third largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany and the U.K.

 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

 

  • Perform operational inspection planning with complex 3D measuring equipment
  • Use measurement machinery to conduct pre-assembly vehicle geometry testing, determine measuring parameters for differing production runs, and interpret measurement data
  • Program measuring robots with sensor technology, calibrate new reference and measurement points, replace and maintain measuring components
  • Compare planned vs. actual measurement data; initiate production stop if tolerance is exceeded   
    • Must make judgments based on measurement data that may affect production. Communicate issues to the responsible quality department
    • Read, analyze, and chart measurement data. Present measurement data in scheduled quality meetings
  • Conduct training and briefings for new employees in coordination with the engineering office.
  • Utilize and observe Safety Data Sheets in day-to-day work
  • Brief incoming shift of measuring operations, relevant incidents, task lists, and daily information Participate in projects and working groups
  • Apply complex Quality Management Methods (E.G. risk management and reliability predictions)

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 5 years of relevant measuring experience
  • A minimum or 1 year experience in an assembly/manufacturing environment

  • Associate’s Degree in a technical trade (industrial technology, mechatronics, etc.) and 2 years relevant measuring

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of 3D coordinate systems, robotics, metal processing, and data processing
