Under the ownership of Oceana Gold, the Haile Gold Mine of Lancaster County, South Carolina is transforming regional economic development while setting new standards for environmental protection throughout the industry.

By applying proven, modern technology and eco-friendly practices that go beyond regulatory requirements, millions of dollars are being invested in the community to build the mine and extract its estimated 30.5 million tonnes at 2.06 g/t for 2 million ounces of gold reserves(1). When all is said and done, more than 800 jobs will be created in an effort to make the Haile Gold Mine the most productive mine of its kind east of the Mississippi River – and the industry’s most environmentally sound operation throughout the United States. Health & Safety Specialist

 

  

Job Summary:   Under general supervision, identifies, reports/recommends corrective action for workplace safety issues including unsafe conditions and behaviors and develops, conducts or facilitates, and assess a wide variety of strategic employee safety training for the site.

 

 

Basic Functions of the Position: 

  • Assists in conducting detailed safety assessments, analyses of occupational injuries, facility design, equipment and material, audits, incident investigations
  • Develops and recommends appropriate remedial action in response to unsafe conditions or behavior
  • Assists site management in complying with OSHA, MSHA and other regulations and standards Maintains a current knowledge of OSHA, MSHA and other regulations and standards
  • Prepares appropriate monthly, quarterly and annual reports for management as assigned by supervisor
  • Performs other duties as required including but not limited to:  collaborates with operating departments to identify and assess employee training needs; coordinates, pilots and presents safety training sessions; maintains files and records of safety training attendance, completion, certification and evaluation; researches training materials and prepares or recommends purchase from vendors

 

 Requirements

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Health and Safety Field OR  Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering or closely related area
  • Five (5) years experience with an Associate’s Degree OR Three (3) years experience with a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Ability to analyze information and draw conclusions
  • Ability to perform sophisticated accident and incident investigation and maintain inspection records
  • Ability to communicate in one-on-one and group situations
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards
  • Ability to apply a broad knowledge of training and development techniques, tools and processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

 

 

Physical Demands:

 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Work is in an open pit mine setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in the mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
