Under the ownership of Oceana Gold, the Haile Gold Mine of Lancaster County, South Carolina is transforming regional economic development while setting new standards for environmental protection throughout the industry.

By applying proven, modern technology and eco-friendly practices that go beyond regulatory requirements, millions of dollars are being invested in the community to build the mine and extract its estimated 30.5 million tonnes at 2.06 g/t for 2 million ounces of gold reserves⁽¹⁾. Mine Geotechnical Engineer

Job Summary:   This position is to develop and maintain mine geotechnical management systems for open pits, waste dumps, and underground mining in support of the technical services department.Tech Supervisor.  

Basic Functions of the Position: 

• Development and implement of a pit slope Management System.  This shall consist of (but not limited to) the following items.
  • Collect geotechnical data, analyze, interpret, and report
  • Slope designs based on geotechnical analysis and implementation.
  • Slope monitoring systems implementation and maintenance.
  • Slope audits and all credible slope failure modes considered.
  • Ground water pore pressure reduction and monitoring and surface water diversion.
  • Controlled blasting and blast monitoring.
  • Slope alert criteria.
  • Emergency failure response plan.
  • Liaise between Technical Services and Operations regularly
  • Utilize consultants as needed.
  • Drive a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and high performance.
    

 Requirements

• BS degree in Mining Engineering or similar
• Ten years geotechnical experience in an open pit mine environment.
• Experienced in controlled drilling and blasting
• Experienced in mine dewatering and pit depressurization
• Experienced with MSHA regulations in a large open pit mine
• Know capabilities of mobile mining equipment
• Knowledge of geology and geotechnical aspects of pit slope design
• Knowledge of latest geotechnical monitoring processes
• Knowledge of pit slope successes and failures worldwide in open pit mines
• Know how to manage risk of maximizing slope angle and minimizing costs
• Acts in a manner that builds trust and demonstrates integrity.
• Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with others.
• Promotes high levels of accountability and employee empowerment.
• Committed to continuously improving the safe and efficient operation of the mine.
• Acts with a sense of urgency when troubleshooting and resolving problems
• Team building skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of Microsoft office
  

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
• Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
• Work is in an open pit mine setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
• Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in the mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
