Under the ownership of Oceana Gold, the Haile Gold Mine of Lancaster County will be the industry’s leader in environmentally sound and safe mining operations through applying proven, modern technology and eco-friendly practices that go beyond regulatory requirements.  Haile Gold Mine was one of America’s first operating gold mines.  After acquiring all necessary permits, the next phase of the project is to begin mining processes.

Environmental Technician I 

 

 

 

 

  

 

Basic Functions of the Position: 

 

  • Able to sample Ground Water
  • Able to sample Surface Water
  • Able to sample Storm Water
  • Able to sample Post Closure
  • Knows location of each point and can get there
  • Knows basic information:
  • PH, condition, parameter of concern
  • Design
  • Equipment:
  • Can use meters, divers
  • Can troubleshoot meters

 

Requirements:

 

  • Basic knowledge of computers and good writing and communication skills
  • Familiarity with environmental sampling and environmental data
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access
  • Recording data, preparing reports, summaries and charts
  • Basic environmental, health & safety regulations – DHEC, EPA, DOT MSHA
  • Basic waste collection & handling procedures
  • Should be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Should be able to function both independently and as a contributing member of a team
  • Should be able to document well including laboratory work, field readings, visual observations, and test results
  • Should be able to prepare samples for safe shipment to the lab
  • Ability to write legibly
  • Ability to deliver environmental training (SPCC, SWPPP, BMP, etc.)
  • Ability to calibrate sampling and laboratory equipment
  • Ability to operate mobile equipment including forklifts, pickup trucks, pallet jacks. 
  • Typically requires a 2-year college degree in science field
  • Environmental certification may be required
  • Not less than two (2) years experience
  • Ability to read and understand basic memorandums
  • Ability to perform oral and written communication
  • Ability to perform basic or college level math

Physical Demands: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
  • Oceana Gold promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing.
