Under the ownership of Romarco Minerals, Inc., the Haile Gold Mine of Lancaster County will be the industry’s leader in environmentally sound and safe mining operations through applying proven, modern technology and eco-friendly practices that go beyond regulatory requirements.  Haile Gold Mine was one of America’s first operating gold mines.  After acquiring all necessary permits, the next phase of the project is to begin mining processes.

Environmental Engineer

  

Job Summary:  This position is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining environmental programs that are consistent with company policies and procedures.

 

 

Basic Functions of the Position: 

  • Responsible for all aspects of environmental permitting and compliance: sampling, monitoring, reporting and data entry
  • Assist with site permitting activities
  • Oversee solid and hazardous waste management program (waste profiling, characterization, collection, manifesting, and shipping) including the SPCC program
  • Manage SPCC programs
  • Oversee Air Permit compliance
  • Conducts facility inspections and audits
  • Assist with environmental training programs (RCRA, DOT, SWPPP, SPCC, Method 9, etc.)
  • Assist with field & laboratory sampling, if needed
  • Ensure lab compliance with requirements to maintain certification
  • Assist in development of an effective and efficient site environmental management system
  • Manage applicable environmental database
  • One Environmental Technician reports to this position, both if second engineer position unfilled.

 

 

 

 Requirements

  • Must be familiar with various regulatory requirements including those of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), EPA and USACE
  • Must be familiar with the regulatory requirements of Department of Transportation (DOT), Community Right To Know (SARA), CERCLA, HAZWOPER
  • Must be capable of performing routine water, waste and air monitoring Must be able to manage environmental data Must be able to prepare reports for applicable agencies
  • Must be able to oversee compliance for active mine site and associated lab
  • Should be a self-starter and able to work at times with limited supervision
  • Must be highly organized, innovative and committed to continuous improvement related to applicable environmental laws and regulations
  • Should be able to function both independently and as a contributing member of the Environmental team
  • Possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Should be able to establish effective relationships with key stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and AutoCAD programs
  • Must have Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/engineering, geology, hydrology or other related resource fields
  • Five (5) years’ experience in a similar position in the mining industry, is preferred, but those candidates with less experience may be considered, depending on qualifications

Language Skills: Should possess ability to discuss and present technical related information with regulatory agencies, officials and management

 

Mathematics Ability: Should be able to perform college level math

 

Reasoning ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions

 

 

 

Physical Demands: 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
