DEFINITION

To configure intelligent electronic fire/life safety software and hardware systems; to perform diagnostic testing and inspection of such systems; and to perform final, on-site inspection and testing of fire/life safety systems installation/operation at County facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from assigned supervisory personnel.

Exercises technical and functional supervision over less experienced technical staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Configure electronic fire/life safety software and hardware systems as related to County facilities and capital improvement projects.
  • Identify and assess fire/life safety conditions and/or emergency needs of County facilities.
  • Review plans and requirements for County buildings relative to fire safety devices; name and identify devices and map locations within a facility.
  • Identify the range of available fire/life safety devices for detection, system integration, notification/emergency response and guided egress; determine the purpose and number of devices involved in a system.
  • Prepare programmable logic statements to address each variable of circumstances to create functionality in software applications; design logic statements using logic such as and, or, not, only, anyx to create logic argument.
  • Work with contractors, consultants, and vendors in planning, design, and installation of cabling runs, panels, and system boards to create a centralized monitoring system.
  • Perform diagnostic testing and inspection of fire/life safety systems.
  • Perform final on-site inspections and testing of systems installed at County facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with code requirements related to emergency conditions/situations.
  • Monitor and analyze integrated systems applications.
  • Test file data and review for data corruption in files and back-up data; prepare thorough and complete system documentation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Three years of responsible fire/life safety software and hardware systems design review and implementation experience.

Training: Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major course work in electronics, computer science or a related field. 

Required License or Certificate:

  • May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by end of probationary period, an electronic life/fire systems certificate issued by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by end of  probationary period, a fire alarm servicing certificate issued by the National Fire Protection Association.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by end of probationary period, life safety system factory certificate as determined by the Department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of computer software and hardware uses and applications.
  • Principles and practices of intelligent fire/life safety systems, including detection/suppression engineered systems and related detection/activation devices.
  • Practices and methods of plan check review and on-site inspection; mathematical calculations related to review of system design.
  • Pertinent local, State, and Federal statutes, regulations and laws.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Principles and practices of good customer service.
  • Principles and practices of work safety.

Ability to:

  • Configure intelligent electronic fire/life safety software and hardware systems.
  • On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job.  Intermittently analyze work papers, reports and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe fire/life safety configuration activities and problem solve when appropriate; understand, interpret and explain Department policies and procedures; adapt to new and complex computer software.
  • On a continuous basis, sit at desk or computer station; intermittently walk, stand or bend while performing on-site inspections; twist and reach office equipment, write and use keyboard to communicate through written means; and regularly lift weight of 10 pounds or less.
  • Create complex, nested logic statements.
  • Perform hardware repairs and upgrades by replacing chips and logic boards.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software problems; upload/download data bases.
  • Read and interpret building plans and diagrams, especially as related to fire/life safety systems design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Work independently and as a cooperative, contributing member of a team.
  • Organize and manage multiple priorities and perform a variety of work assignments.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups, customers, co-workers and supervisors in a respectful, tactful and effective manner.
  • Operate a personal computer in an on-line processing environment, and utilize relevant software application programs and databases.
