To perform skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment; to inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; and to diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs.

Automotive Mechanic
This is the entry level class in the Automotive Mechanic series.  This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series.  Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgement on matters allocated to the journey level.  Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.  Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Master Automotive Mechanic
This is the full journey level class within the Automotive Mechanic series.  This class is distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.

Automotive Mechanic
Receives immediate supervision from the Supervising Automotive Mechanic.

Master Automotive Mechanic
Receives general supervision from the Supervising Automotive Mechanic.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Disassemble and assemble engines and perform minor and major overhaul and repairs on brake, electrical, fuel, lubrication, cooling, air conditioning, vacuum and hydraulic systems and drive train; inspect and repair air pollution control devices, brakes and head lamps.
• Install batteries, tires and wiring; repair and paint bodies and fenders; lubricate and service equipment; provide roadside service and operate tow truck as needed; maintain appropriate records.
• When assigned, perform skilled maintenance and repair work on alternative fuel vehicles.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform general facility maintenance and clean-up tasks; order supplies.
• Maintain various manuals; install and maintain equipment used in repair work.

Automotive Mechanic

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of responsible experience in the repair of automotive and related power driven equipment.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Additional specialized training in automotive diagnostics, maintenance and repair is desirable.

Required License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, a valid Class B driver's license.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
 
Master Automotive Mechanic

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of responsible experience performing duties similar to those of an Automotive Mechanic in Placer County.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Additional specialized training in automotive diagnostics, maintenance and repair is desirable.

Required License or Certificate

• Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, a valid Class B driver's license.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, smog check, lamp adjuster and brake licenses issued by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to the completion of the probationary period, freon handling and use certificate.

Automotive Mechanic

Knowledge of:

• Principles of gasoline and diesel engine mechanics as applied to the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
• Tools, equipment and methods used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair and adjustment of motor equipment.
• Principles of operation of alternative fuel automotive vehicles.
• Arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules.  Intermittently diagnose and analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain job to others.
• Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing installation or repair of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; regularly lift very heavy weight.
• Perform major and minor repairs on automotive equipment.  Read and understand technical reports and instructions and schematic drawings and diagrams.
• Use a computer, telephone, two-way radio, facsimile machine, postage meter and photocopy machine.
• Use towing equipment, forklift, hydraulic lift, hand cart, air and power tools and welding tools and equipment.
• Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Master Automotive Mechanic

In addition to the qualifications for Automotive Mechanic:

Knowledge of:

• General automotive fleet policies and procedures.
• Inspection and repair of automotive air pollution control devices, head lamps and brakes.

Ability to:

• Independently, diagnose problems and perform major and minor repairs on automotive equipment; read and understand technical reports and instructions and schematic drawings and diagrams.
• Independently, conduct inspection and repair of automotive air pollution control devices, head lamps and brakes.
