The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Fire Department are announcing a recruitment for the position of Fire Dispatcher to dispatch County staff and provide the necessary communication and coordination for fire and medical staff from multiple agencies, including volunteer and mutual aid agencies.

CURRENT VACANCY:  The current vacancy is for a Fire Dispatcher job share position located at the Marin County Fire Department headquarters in Woodacre where the successful candidate will share a full-time position with another employee, working a 48 hour shift followed by 96 hours off.  The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and all future vacancies that occur while the list remains active.  Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six months.

Position Information

IDEAL CANDIDATE:  The ideal candidate will have experience working in a fire dispatch center serving rural, semi-rural, suburban and metropolitan areas and will be familiar with wildland fire dispatching.  The ideal candidate will be also be familiar with the major roads, streets, geography, facilities, fire and medical response agencies and jurisdictional boundaries of Marin County; will have the ability to assess emergency situations appropriately and take the required action quickly and calmly while communicating information and instructions clearly by telephone and radio.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience as a dispatcher in a public safety agency or similar emergency service organization.  Experience in a related emergency services capacity may be substituted for the dispatch experience on a year for year basis.  Knowledge of California Fire Mutual Aid resource ordering, the Geographical Area Coordination Center (GACC) system and the Resource Ordering and Status System (ROSS) are highly desirable.

Other Requirements:  Candidates must be willing to work a 24 hour shift, 7 day per week schedule and to be called back and work overtime in emergency situations.  Candidates may also be subject to a background investigation and psychological screening. 

Testing Schedule

Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination process may consist of a highly qualified review, online assessment, supplemental application screening, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list.
