BRIDGE OPERATOR LEAD WORKER

Introduction

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Purpose

A bridge operator lead worker attends, maintains and operates the City's movable bridges over the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers to ensure safe passage for vessels in accordance with Federal rules and regulations; schedules bridge openings and roving operations and assists the Bridge Operator Supervisor in assigning, leading, directing and coordinating Bridge Operators.

Essential Functions

  • Leads and coordinates bridge operators for the purpose of roving operations and sick replacements for all shifts, seven days per week.         
  • Instructs bridge operators in bridge operations.        
  • Operates electrical/mechanical equipment to open and close bridges within the system, smoothly and safely and with a minimum of interference to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.         
  • Provides and maintains continuous service on assigned bridges at all times during the operator shift.        
  • Operates unstaffed bridges on a roving system as required, using a vehicle or on foot.         
  • Operates unattended bridges with a remote control system using audio/visual monitors and a separate control panel.       
  • Completes daily inspections and maintains all bridge machinery mechanisms such as gearing, cables, bearings, and centerlocks by degreasing, lubricating and keeping them clean and free of all debris, snow, ice, etc.          
  •  Makes minor repairs to bridge equipment.        
  • Inspects and cleans machinery platforms, counterweight pits and bridge walks by removing snow, ice, water and debris, including hosing down of such and dewatering of pits with a pump.       
  • Performs housekeeping duties, such as washing windows, walls, floors, ceiling, control panels, etc., and accessible lighting fixtures, pit and navigation lights.        
  • Operates and monitors a marine radio telephone.     
  • Accurately records and reports all bridge related activity.

Conditions of Employment

Employees are required to work on a 3-shift, rotating basis including weekends and holidays.

Minimum Requirements

1. Current status as a regularly appointed City of Milwaukee Bridge Operator, having passed probation for current position held.

2. One year of experience as a Bridge Operator.

3.  Valid driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Ability to work in confined areas such as bridge pits and equipment rooms.         
  • Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical principles.         
  • Ability to work alone in confined areas.         
  • Ability to move up to 50 lbs and various pieces of mechanical equipment while working alone.        
  • Ability to shovel snow from assigned bridge and other bridges as needed.        
  • Ability to use physical force to operate hand crank for centerlock and traffic gates.        
  • Ability to climb vertical ladders up to 50 ft.       
  • Ability to stoop and bend.         
  • Ability to operate controls, read scales and gauges, view monitors and computer screens.      
  • Ability to hear and see vessels, pedestrians and motor vehicles.        
  • Ability to interact with the public.        
  • Ability to use hand tools.       
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures.        
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.         
  • Ability to solve problems.

Current Salary

THE CURRENT SALARY (PG 8IN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $42,139 annually, and the non-resident starting salary is $41,105. 

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Public Works Infrastructure Division reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.  

NOTE:  Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current non-probationary City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
