Introduction

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY.

Purpose

A Bridge Operator attends, maintains and operates the City's movable bridges over the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers to insure safe passage for vessels in accordance with Federal and Coast Guard rules and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Operate electrical/mechanical equipment to open and close bridges within the system, smoothly and safely and with a minimum of interference to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.        
  • Provide and maintain continuous service on assigned bridges at all times during the operators’ shift.        
  • Operate unattended bridges by use of remote control system, utilizing audio and visual monitors and a separate control panel.
  • Operate unstaffed bridges on a roving system as directed, traveling by vehicle or on foot.        
  • Conduct daily inspections of all bridge platforms and machinery mechanisms such as gearing, cables, bearings, center locks, bumper beams, sheaves, and traffic gates, etc.       
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance on machinery platforms, counterweight pits, and bridge walks by lubricating and degreasing machinery, cleaning, sweeping and hosing down pits, platforms and walks; remove snow, ice, and water.
  • Make minor repairs to bridge equipment such as replacing or repairing grease lines, grease guns, and pump hoses.     
  • Inspect and clean machinery platforms, counterweight pits and bridge walks by removing snow, ice, water and debris, including hosing down of such and dewatering of pits with a pump.         
  • Perform housekeeping duties, such as washing windows, walls, floors, ceiling, and control panels.          
  • Inspect and change bulbs on accessible lighting fixtures such as pit, navigation, and bridge house lights.
  • Operate and monitor a marine radio; communicate with vessels for bridge openings.          
  • Accurately record and report all vessel movements, bridge openings, complaints, malfunctions and inspections in the weekly report.        
  • Provide security to prevent vandalism.

Conditions of Employment

  • Initially, Bridge Operators are seasonal positions (April through November). Eventually, the person hired will become year-round through attrition.
  • Both seasonal and year-round employees are required to work on a 3-shift, rotating basis including weekends and holidays.

Minimum Requirements

1. Current status as a regularly appointed employee of the City of Milwaukee having passed the probationary period for the current position held.

2. Valid driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience operating and/or servicing heavy duty mechanical/electrical equipment.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical principles.  
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures.    
  • Ability to work alone in confined areas.     
  • Ability to lift, transport and/or move various pieces of mechanical equipment weighing up to 50 pounds while working alone.     
  • Ability to climb circular and/or vertical ladders up to 50 feet.      
  • Ability to shovel snow from assigned bridge and other bridges as needed.    
  • Ability to use physical force to operate hand crank for centerlock and traffic gates.     
  • Ability to stoop and bend.    
  • Ability to operate controls, read scales and gauges, view monitors and computer screens.     
  • Ability to hear and see vessels, pedestrians and motor vehicles.  
  • Ability to interact with the public.     
  • Ability to use hand tools.  
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.    
  • Ability to solve problems.  

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 8GN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $40,021 annually, and the non-resident starting salary is $39,039. 

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Public Works Infrastructure Division reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.  

NOTE:  Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current non-probationary City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
