Purpose

An auditor conducts audits of City departments and agencies according to Internal Audits risk-based approach audit plan. These audits evaluate internal controls of business processes, efficiencies, effectiveness of programs/functions, and also compliance with applicable laws, regulations or management policies of the City.  Audit reports are provided to management and appropriate elected officials to communicate findings and recommendations for improvement.  The internal audit function is a significant part of safeguarding City assets, resources, and productivity in order to provide quality services to the community.

 

Essential Functions

w Conducts planning for performance audits by researching scope of audit, formulating work plan, and  preparing announcement letters  and progress reports of audit.

w Performs audit procedures, including walkthroughs/interviews, test procedures which include onsite reviews, document and transaction examinations, inquiries and analysis of processes audited.

w Prepares orderly, logical work papers that document and support the audit work performed.  Clearly documents findings and related recommendations in the workpapers for final review before report.

w Prepares clear and detailed reports.

w Meets continuing education requirements and participates in audit process improvement.

Minimum Requirements

1.     Bachelor’s Degree with a major in accounting or a related field from an accredited college or university.

2.     A minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional auditing experience gained in an internal auditor or external auditor position.  Audit positions previously held must be of a financial, compliance, operational, or performance auditing type.

Desirable Qualifications

w  Certification as a CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CGAP (Certified Government Auditing Professional)

w  Proficiency with Microsoft office and Excel and basic knowledge of automated software

Current Salary

The current starting salary (PG 2GX) for City of Milwaukee residents is $ 51,469 annually, and the non-resident starting salary is $ 50,206.   Appointment above the minimum is possible. 

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

 INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after January 23, 2015. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice.  However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration. The applicant is responsible for attending all phases of the job selection process at the time and place designated by the City of Milwaukee.
