Purpose

The Electrical Services Machinist I performs skilled machining, metal fabrication and skilled equipment repair.

Essential Functions

  • Installing and repairing hydraulically operated equipment and aerial equipment.
  • Repairing and maintaining air tools, pumps, trailers, derricks, paint spray machines, small engines and equipment unique to Electrical Services.
  • Machining of sign standards, signs, brackets and supports; sheet metal cabinet work of light and heavy gauge steel and aluminum.
  • Machining and fabricating of tools, jigs, fixtures and repairs of same as required for all sections and divisions of Infrastructure Field Operations and other Machine Shop work as required.

Conditions of Employment

Electrical Services Machinists I must furnish basic tools of the trade for use on the job.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Three (3) years of job shop machinist experience, performing duties related to this position.
  2. A valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

NOTE:  Equivalent combinations of training and experience may also be considered.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of machining methods, materials, and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of welding and welding safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of metal types and metal properties when machine is done to different types of material.
  • Ability to safely utilize machinist’s tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, sheet metal benders, rollers, breaks, press break and shears, pipe benders and hydraulic benders, and punch press.
  • Ability to read and interpret charts, tables, blueprints, and designs.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions (including inclement weather) for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds of equipment or materials and more weight with assistance.

Current Salary

SALARY (PG 7JN): The current starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $50,175 annually. The non-resident starting salary is $48,944 annually.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.  

The examination will be held as soon as practical after February 13, 2015. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice.  However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration.
