Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to provide on-the-job training for those individuals interested in becoming a Police Officer who are at least 18 years old , but not older than 19. Police Cadets serve as non-sworn, full-time employees in one of Montgomery Police Department’s divisions until reaching age 19. The essential functions of this position are: performs clerical and administrative related duties and monitors and maintains the physical perimeters of division grounds. Police Cadets are typically supervised by division superior officers.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment. Police Cadets must apply for the Police Officer Trainee position immediately and enter the next scheduled Police Academy following their 19th birthday. Individuals who do not successfully complete the Police Academy or fail to apply for Police Officer as soon as they are 19 will be terminated. Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid Alabama Driver’s License prior to employment. Applicants will be fingerprinted and backgrounds thoroughly investigated prior to consideration for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be certified by a licensed physician, designated as satisfactory by the appointing authority, to be in good health and physically fit for the performance of duties.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Police Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered in order to rank applicants on the employment register. Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
