Nature of Work

The fundamental reason that this classification exists is to serve as department head for the general therapeutic recreation department at the Montgomery Therapeutic Recreation Center.  The Center makes recreation accessible to those who otherwise might not be able to participate. The incumbent works with assigned employees to employ leisure activities to help patients with disabilities or illnesses. Through the development of general recreation programs and activities, the incumbent works with staff to maintain the physical and emotional well-being of participants. The incumbents work is assigned and evaluated by the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or a related field and one year of experience planning and implementing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. 

Special Requirements

Special requirements may be obtained during probation and must be maintained for continued employment. This position requires the operation of city vehicles (bus or van) while conducting city business.  In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely and must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) B (Passenger Endorsement). Incumbent is required to maintain CPR and first aid certifications. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Must be able to work flexible schedules, depending on program needs including working nights and weekends and shifting assignment as program needs change. Must be able to use vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies such as inappropriate behavior from participants, minor accidents from participation in activities, mechanical or technical malfunctions with equipment and must respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately. 

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancies are with the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Center. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, a selection procedure will be administered to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
