Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to market, book, plan, and coordinate various events on the Montgomery Riverboat. The Events planner is primarily involved in private events taking place on the city-owned and operated Riverboat; however, position incumbents are required to assist in other events organized and/or sponsored by the Special Events Division of the Leisure Services Department.  Primary work responsibilities may include: soliciting and booking leases for special events on the Riverboat; developing and implementing marketing strategies and plans; serving as point of contact for Riverboat rentals; planning and coordinate events with and for Riverboat customers; maintaining a Riverboat events calendar; managing contracts for all Riverboat rentals; and collaborating with other Special Events staff on projects and events. The Events Planner works closely with the Events Coordinators and receives supervision from the Special Events Director.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two years of full-time experience in planning, coordinating, and promoting special events. A Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, marketing, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year and six months of the required two years of experience. 

Special Requirements

Must work nights, weekends and holidays as required. Physical ability to lift equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds as needed to load, unload and set up for special events.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Leisure Services Department - Special Events Division.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
