Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this job exists is to operate heavy equipment used in refuse disposal at the City’s landfill.  The essential functions are: performs maintenance on equipment; drives and operates heavy earth moving equipment; and performs other related tasks such as documenting work and directing the work of others.  Employees use a variety of equipment such as tractors, backhoes, bulldozers, scrapers, front-end loaders, dump trucks, and trash compactors.  They work under the direction of a Heavy Equipment Operator and have little or no supervisory duties as compared to Heavy Equipment Operators.  In addition, they are in training to use all pieces of heavy equipment for future advancement to Heavy Equipment Operator.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience in the operation of earth moving equipment such as bulldozers, scrapers, excavators, tractors, backhoes, and/or dump trucks.

Special Requirements

Must have Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of employment in order to operate required equipment.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Engineering Department - Landfill Division.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application. Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
