Electrical Inspector

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to inspect the installation, construction, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code, City ordinances and regulations. The work involves field and office activities relating to, inspecting a variety of electrical installations to include residential, commercial and illuminated signs. The essential functions are: interprets the National Electrical Code, the City codes and ordinances and recommends and enforces compliance; maintains daily records and prepares reports; and inspects electrical installations to verify conformance with safety standards, codes and ordinances. The work is subject to general supervision by the Chief Electrical Inspector and may be reviewed by periodic inspection checks. General direction is received from the Chief Electrical Inspector.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and at least five years of experience to include both residential and commercial electrical installations, construction, maintenance and repair; and must have a current State of Alabama Unlimited Electrical Contractor’s License.

Special Requirements

Must have a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to operate a City vehicle for the inspection of installations, construction, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment; and must have a current Electrical Inspector certification through the International Code Council or must obtain certification within one year of employment with the City of Montgomery.
 
PHYSICAL ABILITIES: The ability to walk, run, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel, climb ladders and stairs as needed. The ability to use all tools associated with electrical construction and repair.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery, Inspections Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be scored to rank the qualified applicants on the eligible register and tied scores will not be broken. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
