Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to prepare and oversee engineering and architectural technical drawings using CAD (computer-aided design) software.  Field work may require obtaining measurements to ensure actual field conditions are properly shown on the drawings.  The essential functions are: prepares civil  engineering, architectural, and other technical  drawings; serves as the computer custodian for office automation as is the subject matter expert and trainee for the department on Computer Aided Design systems; supervises one full-time employee; reviews and prepares maps and geographic records, material for entry into the GIS Geographic Information System) database.  Work is performed under the supervision of the City Engineer who checks for technical accuracy. 

Distinguishing Characteristics:   Positions in this classification are normally filled by advancement from the journey level classification of Engineering Technician II, or when filled from the outside, required prior para-professional engineering experience and substantial knowledge.  Incumbents of this classification perform the more complex technical support duties requiring  independent judgement. The Engineering Technician III is distinguished from the Engineering Technician II by the technical complexity of the work.  The work involves para-professional engineering work, drafting and designing plans, and resolving problems.  Engineering Technician III’s may provide indirect supervision to lower level engineering technicians. The Engineering Technician III reports to the City Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or G.E.D. and five years of civil engineering and architectural related Auto CAD (computer-aided design) and/or Micro Station drafting experience.  Completion of technical college course work in drafting or related field may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s License and insurable driving record as needed to operate a City vehicle to travel to various work sites.  

Kind of Examination

If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
