Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide technical legal and clerical work for the Municipal Court in the issuing and recording of warrants, subpoenas, affidavits and petitions, conditional forfeiture, appeal bonds, and other legal documents and in the setting and granting of bail.  The essential functions of the class are: sets appropriate amount of cash or property bonds; creates and access court files and records; processes and/or issues legal and non-legal documents; hears complaints and asks appropriate questions to make probable cause determinations; responds to telephone and email inquiries; reschedules court dates for misdemeanor or traffic cases; processes bail received for individuals.  Employees are supervised by the Senior Magistrate and work with considerable independence, but are advised to consult with higher level court personnel on complex complaints.  Work is reviewed for conformity with legal procedures and points of law by other Magistrates, Senior Magistrate and/or the Court Administrator.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field; or four years of experience making decisions related to issuing warrants or law enforcement making arrests.

Special Requirements

Must be willing to work rotating shift work, holidays and weekends as required or needed and to work an eight hour shift without lengthy breaks at locations designated by the Municipal Court management. Overtime shift work maybe required as needed to accomplish department objectives. Upon employment, applicants must enroll in and successfully complete the Alabama Municipal Court Magistrates' Certification Program as required by the Municipal Courts Administrator within the first two years and must attend yearly maintenance courses or any other requirements issued by the Alabama Office of the Courts as required to maintain certification.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Municipal Court.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application and supplemental questionnaire form completely, providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If there are more than five qualified applicants, a selection procedure will be administered to rank the applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
