Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to plan, organize, and direct the Museum’s offsite Educational Programs for Youth related to the Museum’s Exhibitions and Collections. Outreach programs incorporate discussion and creative response, including art making and interdisciplinary components, and currently include Learning Through Art (currently offered weekly to two grade levels at a local school) and Art in the Afternoon (currently offered after school weekly at 4 locations).  This is professional museum work requiring the independent application of basic pedagogy and communication techniques used in museum programs. The work responsibilities are: Designs program curriculum; teaches and leads outreach sessions; designs program evaluations; serves as a liaison with partner organizations; works with colleagues to provide institutional data and information; coordinates several juried student art exhibitions; and performs staffing duties for the Museum’s Outreach programs.  The Museum Curator II reports to the Museum Curator III, Curator of Education. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with Bachelor’s  Degree in Art Education, Museum Studies, Art History, Design, Studio Art or related field. Two (2) years of education experience in a museum, non-profit, or school.           

Special Requirements

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted as needed to move and lift boxes of materials and supplies; ability to climb a five-step ladder, reach, stoop, bend, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to travel to local agencies or businesses. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends, as needed by Museum.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If there are more than five qualified applicants, a selection procedure will be administered to rank the applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
