Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is provide advanced, competition level gymnastics training and development to girls and boys.  Although incumbents may initially be assigned to specific teams/programs, these assignments may change as the needs of the facility change. 

The essential functions for the classification include the following:  coaches boys and/or girls gymnastics teams, trains others to train/develop gymnasts, oversees the team programs for competition, travels to competitions and performances, and performing various administrative and gymnastic related duties.  The Gymnastics Recreation Leader II differs from the Gymnastics Recreation Leader I in that the II level is responsible for more advanced training and development of gymnastics skills and assists the Gymnastics Supervisor with facility operations while the I level is responsible for the training and development of beginning and intermediate skills.  Incumbents work as a team with other recreation leaders and special pay instructors who are all supervised by the Gymnastics Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and two years of experience teaching and/or coaching competitive gymnastics for regional and/or national qualifiers.  Regional or national qualifier experience in the past eight years is preferred.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Alabama's driver's license as needed to travel to meets.  Must be available to attend all program related competitions and performances which may include after hours and weekends.  Must be able to work irregular hours and on weekends for competitions and performances.  Must be registered and maintain registration with the USAG (USA Gymnastics) and receive and maintain the Safety Certification within the probationary period.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:  This position requires; the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, hand eye coordination, spotting and lifting athletes of various ages and sizes, with physical manipulation of skills for recreation training, instruction, and coaching.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any other vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is at the Armory Gymnastics which is part of the Parks and Recreation Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire.  For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were.  If more than five qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants on the register.  Tied scores will not be broken (in accordance with Personnel Rules and Regulations, Rule VII, Section 3). If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
