Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

Nature of Work

This is skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and heavy equipment. Incumbents must have a high degree of technical ability as it relates to engine repairs and major assembly rebuilding. Responsibilities include repairing diesel engines, replacing and installing Allison, New World and Rockwell transmissions, repairing cooling and air conditioning systems, repairing electrical systems, repairing or replacing fuel systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, and hydraulic systems, performing miscellaneous repairs or modifications on diesel engines and heavy equipment and overhauling engines. Incumbents are supervised by the Garage Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

At least three years of experience as an automotive, diesel engine and heavy equipment mechanic within the past five years to include performance at the journeyman level. At least one of the three years of experience must be as a diesel engine and heavy equipment mechanic. The journeyman experience must include at least two years of apprenticeship experience working under a trained mechanic and at least one year of experience working independently as a lead mechanic.

OR must possess a diploma or certificate in diesel mechanics or a related area from a technical school and at least one year of experience within the past five years working independently as a diesel engine or heavy equipment mechanic. 

Independent work experience must include making repairs as a lead mechanic to include diesel engines, transmissions, tires, hydraulic and air brake systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and fuel systems. 

Must also have experience conducting diagnostic tests to isolate problems such as with diesel engines, engine components, or computerized automatic and standard transmissions on diesel engines and heavy equipment or fire apparatus. 

Experience at operating heavy equipment or the ability to learn to operate heavy equipment in order to diagnose problems and perform road tests. 

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license. Must be willing to obtain an Alabama CDL driver's license as needed  to operate heavy equipment when conducting road tests. Must be able to attend specialized training out of town as needed to maintain or increase skills. Must be willing to respond to the Garage in order to make repairs to diesel engines and heavy equipment after normal working hours and be willing to be on call 24 hours during emergency situations or when deemed necessary by the director or his designated representative.

Kind of Examination
