Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform professional engineering and administrative work assisting in the direction of the Montgomery County Engineering Department.  The employee is responsible to the County Engineer for the maintenance and construction of all County roads and bridges.  Supervision is exercised over technical, clerical and subordinate supervisors. The essential functions are: manages the development of major County road and bridge construction projects; supervises the management and technical personnel in the routine and emergency inspection, maintenance and repair of all existing County roads and bridges; supervises the issuance of permits for the construction or remodeling of residential, commercial or industrial structures outside the jurisdiction of the City of Montgomery; oversees the preparation of the Engineering Department's annual operating budget and monitors expenditures; supervises the operation of the sign shop; handles calls and complaints from the public or public officials; and supervises two or more full-time employees.   The employee exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative in planning and implementing the work of the department.  The work is performed under the general policies established by the County Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and five years of progressively responsible experience in the construction of major roads, bridges and drainage structures; or fifteen years of progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Preference will be given to a candidate who is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Alabama.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license and an insurable driving record as needed to drive an automobile or truck to travel to remote work sites. Ability to walk long distances over rough terrain as needed to inspect work projects.
