Nature of Work

This is skilled shop and field welding work of the journeyman level in the fabrication and repair of metal and metal equipment.  Work involves the use of acetylene and electrical equipment in the heating, welding, cutting and brazing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in accordance with prints, sketches and oral instructions indicating the type of material to be used.  Little supervision is received concerning work methods or techniques which are generally left to the discretion of the employee, but work is subject to inspection as to volume of production and quality of workmanship.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate and experience as a journeyman welder; or diploma in Welding from an accredited vocational/technical college.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

 


Special Requirements

Employment is conditioned upon applicants acquiring and maintaining an Alabama Driver’s License and providing a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) from the Department of Public Safety as proof of an insurable driving record.  Must be willing to work overtime occasionally on weekdays or weekends and obtain a State of Alabama Department of Transportation Welder Certificate to work on County bridges. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically able to bend, stoop, crawl and stand to weld in awkward positions. Must be physically able to lift and carry weight up to 50 lbs. Must be physically able to work in various weather conditions, heat, cold, and wind while performing field welding duties.
