Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to oversee and promote the operations of the downtown urban farm. Work is performed with considerable independence of judgment and supervision.  This position requires daily interaction with the public and active promotion of community engagement.  Primary work responsibilities may include: managing the Downtown Farm to include physically performing planting and harvesting duties; overseeing the expansion of the farm; developing and implementing strategic sales and usage plans for farm’s produce; partnering with non-profits, community groups, and schools to promote community farming projects as well as the Downtown Farm; and organizing, training, and supervising volunteers.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the District Parks Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and three (3) years of professional, full-time farming experience. Experience in sustainable, organic, and/or urban farming is preferred.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered. 


 

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record as needed to operate City vehicles. Must be able to attend specialized training or classes as needed to maintain or increase skills and update methods.  Must be willing to be on call for emergencies. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds as needed to move materials at work sites. Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, and bend repeatedly for extended periods of time as needed to complete various work tasks as needed to move plants, soil, and equipment.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is primarily performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include extreme heat, cold, rain, and lightning. Work requires exposure to domesticated animals and local wildlife.  Work requires some overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours for daily operation, special events, and emergencies.
