Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to oversee all functions of collections documentation, management, and care for approximately 3700 art objects in the permanent collection and any objects on loan to the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). The registrar is responsible for museum functions of a highly valuable, sensitive and confidential nature with an emphasis on logistics, documentation and risk management and works directly with a broad spectrum of the museum and local community to include colleagues, vendors, donors, lenders, etc. The position ensures continuity of collections care and promotes the highest professional preservation standards in the documentation, handling, storage and conservation of the museum's collections. The registrar is held accountable for the physical inventory of all art objects in the museum's care which cumulatively and/or individually are worth multiple millions of dollars.

The essential functions are: oversees all activities related to collections management;  coordinates logistics for transporting art and works collaboratively with the preparators; supervises one part-time employee, prepares loan agreements and transportation arrangements for outgoing and incoming loans; facilitates care and storage of art works; oversees photography and imaging related to new acquisitions, collections objects and loans; processes reproduction rights requests; manages MMFA Archives and performs other related duties.  Reports to the senior Museum Curator III.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Art History or related field. Five years of Art Museum registration experience or similar experience within the fine arts industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  

Special Requirements

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Position requires moderate physical activity that requires considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 40 pounds.
