Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to direct a wide variety of senior adult activities at an assigned community center. The primary work responsibilities are planning, directing, overseeing and organizing recreational activities, assisting with the general operation of the Community Center and evaluating community center programs for municipal recreation. While these programs are developed in accordance with established general principles and will normally include certain basic activities, employees exercise judgement and initiative in adapting and planning programs within this general outline to the interests and needs of senior adults. Employees in this class may oversee the activities of other employees in the recreational program assigned to his/her area. Serves as acting director in the absence of the director. Employees in this class are supervised by the Community Center Director.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED, preferably supplemented by college courses in recreation or physical education. At least two (2) years of experience working in organized senior adult recreational programs.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must be able to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within six (6) months. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends to attend clinics and/or special events in order to direct and supervise recreation activities.  Must be able to obtain CPR certifications through the Red Cross as well as obtain the certifications needed to safely lead multiple exercise classes.
