Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is teach cheer and/or gymnastics.  Although incumbents may initially be assigned to specific programs, these assignments may change as the needs of the facility change. 

The essential functions are: oversees assigned gymnastic and/or cheer programs; coaches gymnastics and/or cheer classes; teaches recreational classes; and monitors and observes other instructors.  Although incumbents may initially be assigned to specific teams/programs, these assignments may change as the needs of the facility change.  The Recreation Instructor series differs from the Recreation Leader series in that the Recreation Instructors are responsible for training and development of recreational level gymnastics/cheer skills while the Recreation Leaders are responsible for training and development of more complex, competition-level gymnastics/cheer skills.  The Recreation Instructor II differs from the Instructor I level in that the Instructor II is responsible for assisting both Instructor Is and students in the training and development of skills while the Instructor I is responsible for the training and development of students only.  Incumbents work independently as well as with other training staff.  Supervision is received from the Gymnastics Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and one year of experience formally teaching and/or coaching gymnastics and/or cheer.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  

Special Requirements

Must complete USAG's 100: Fundamentals of Gymnastics Instruction and 101: Safety & Risk Management courses within six month probationary period.  Must possess a valid Alabama's driver's license.  Must be available to attend program-related performances which may include after hours and weekends.  Must be able to work irregular hours and on weekends for performances and special events.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:  This position requires; the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, hand eye coordination, spotting and lifting athletes of various ages and sizes, and fine manipulation skills to perform recreation training, instruction, and coaching.
