The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise work crews engaged in manual and semi-skilled labor performing a variety of maintenance and construction duties on public right-of-ways and in neighborhoods.  The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the application of herbicides for public areas.   The major work duties include planning for an assignment, directing activities on a work site, documenting project activities, and supervising a work crew.  Incumbents work under general direction.  Incumbents are generally in charge of the crew, plan and carry out assignments with considerable independence, and have some latitude in developing procedures and methods.  Assignments are received at the beginning of the shift and the foreman typically prioritizes the assignments.  Supervisors are contacted for guidance in cases of unexpected occurrences or unanticipated situations.  Errors made during the performance of tasks can result in safety hazards to the general public and the work crew, for example, improper chemical applications in a neighborhood or other area.

Two (2) years' experience in commercial chemical application such as herbicides, pesticides and/or insecticides, to include some experience as a lead worker or an equivalent combination or education and experience.

This position requires possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License - 'Tanker' Endorsement as needed to drive and operate city vehicles. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed for regular work duty and special events. Applicants must have obtained either a State Public Health License, Ornamental and Turf Pest Control, or a Rights-of-Way License at the time of appointment in order to apply chemicals in the City.
