Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this class exists is to perform advanced professional and supervisory planning work land use, development management, community renewal, environment management, transportation, public facilities, housing, and economic development.  Major work responsibilities include supervising employees, conducting complex studies, preparing complex plans and strategies for development and redevelopment of land, interfacing with the public, and performing various administrative tasks.  Senior Planners typically receive broadly defined assignments which require independent judgment and making technical determinations and decisions.  The Senior Planner is supervised by the Assistant Director and/or the Director of City Planning.  The Senior Planner is making decisions in regards to advanced or complex planning projects and supervising other employees which is what differentiates it from the Planner I and Planner II classifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree with coursework in urban/city planning, urban studies, community planning, or geography, 4 years of progressively responsible professional urban/city planning experience involving program development, strategic planning, research, and analytical applications, and 2 years of experience leading others in the performance of tasks or projects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Professional urban/city planning experience may substitute for the master's degree coursework, but not for the bachelor's degree coursework.  Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners is preferred, but not required.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
