Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to serve as the assistant department head to the Planning Director. Major work functions include managing the personnel function of the department, assisting in the financial management of the department, supervising employees, overseeing and updating the comprehensive planning elements of the department, and assisting with administrative tasks. The Assistant Director works independently with considerable latitude to exercise judgment and initiative in making decisions within established federal, state and local guidelines. Work is performed under the direction of the Planning Director and is reviewed through conferences, reports and results obtained.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in urban or regional planning, business or public administration or a closely related field, planning certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners, and three years of supervisory or management experience managing complex planning functions or projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE:    Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
