Traffic Engineer I (#CI2310)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform professional engineering work in the conduct and maintenance of traffic engineering surveys and projects.  Primary work responsibilities may include: designing plans of and inspecting construction of subdivisions and commercial developments, roadways, and plats; inspecting plans and construction for traffic operations compliance; coordinating and inspecting traffic operations projects; performing traffic engineering studies; designing construction plans for transportation improvement and safety projects; conducting field observation surveys of traffic conditions; and conducting field observations of traffic control devices.  The Traffic Engineer I is distinguished from the Traffic Engineer II in that the level and scope of responsibility exercised by the Traffic Engineer I is less advanced than that of the Traffic Engineer II.  The Traffic Engineer I performs work independently and may advise and direct lower-level technical employees.  Traffic Engineer I incumbents report to the Traffic Engineer II.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a four-year accredited engineering program to include course work or continuing education in traffic engineering. Must possess and maintain Engineer intern (E.I.) status. Traffic or civil engineering experience is preferable.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.


Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record as needed to operate a City vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors and exposes the employee to hazards of traffic control construction sites including dangers of fast moving high speed vehicles, and inclement weather conditions.  Work requires regular physical activities such as walking, crawling, standing, stooping, bending, and operation of a motor vehicle.  Work may require irregular work schedules to include nights, holidays, or weekends as needed during special events or emergencies.
