Civil Engineer II (#CI2072)

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform professional engineering work reviewing public works construction and improvement projects to ensure that they are designed, constructed and inspected according to applicable laws, regulations and standards and within project budget. Incumbents are distinguished from the Civil Engineer III in that the Civil Engineer II does not have responsibility for managing entire engineering projects and distinguished from the Civil Engineer I in the level and scope of responsibility exercised.  Some employees in this classification may assist, advise, or supervise lower level professional and technical employees.  Work is performed with independence; however, the City Engineer is available for assistance when necessary until proficiency is achieved. Work is reviewed for adherence to policies and procedures, accuracy and completeness and for project results.  The work responsibilities are: reviews subdivision construction plans and subdivision plats; inspects construction projects for compliance with approved construction plans and specifications; designs and drafts engineering studies and engineering construction plans of storm water, street improvements, sidewalks, and  recreational sites; receives public requests and complaints regarding storm water drainage problems, BMP controls for construction sites, National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) requirements and other general requests; participates in regulatory environmental monitoring process and supervises two or more full-time employees.   Reports to the City Engineer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering from a four-year engineering program approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and three years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience after college graduation. Must possess or be willing to obtain a Flood Plain Managers Certificate.
  
NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered. 

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Driver's License and an insurable driving record as needed to operate a city vehicle in the performance of work tasks. Must have an EIT or FE certification.  
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed indoors and outdoors and exposes the employee to hazards of construction sites including dangers of moving heavy equipment, inclement weather conditions, and high noise levels. Work requires regular physical activities such as walking, crawling, standing, stooping, bending, and operation of a motor vehicle.
