Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exist is to perform technical engineering and supervisory work in the field and office.  Employee performs supervisory work functions associated with inspection of construction projects by private contractors involving city rights-of-way, streets, subdivision and storm water systems.  Employee in this class follows standard but moderately complex routines in the performance of inspecting, testing, project development and computing assignments.  Essential functions include: supervises two or more full-time employees; supervises the inspection of work performed by developers and private contractors involving new subdivisions and city construction projects and performs administrative duties and referred tasks.  Familiar assignments are received with general instructions while new work is performed under supervision of the City Engineer.  This class is distinguished from Engineering Technician II by technical knowledge needed for more complex projects and supervisory authority.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalence.  Must have six years of experience in street and drainage construction and inspection including two years at the Senior Technician level or a degree in Civil Engineering and two years of supervisory experience in street and drainage construction and inspection or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s License as needed to travel to various job sites.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed predominately outside and includes exposure to extremes in weather conditions, noise, noxious odors and fumes, hazardous traffic and construction site conditions. The work may also involve difficult interpersonal contacts and occasional irregular hours.
