FACULTY MSD - Speech and Language Pathologist

Introduction

LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

To provide speech, language, and aural rehabilitation services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students enrolled at MSD, including those who may have multiple disabilities.  Speech-Language services at MSD help to support a bilingual approach by facilitating and enhancing student communication skills.  Duties include assisting classroom staff in monitoring of hearing aid/cochlear implant equipment, participating in IEP development and serving as an IEP team member, establishing/implementing picture communication systems for students to use at home and in classrooms, collaborating with other specialists on campus, serving as a member of the Related Services Team, and assuming other responsibilities as designated by the department head.

POSITION DUTIES

Administer language, speech and auditory skill diagnostic evaluations;

Conduct speech, language, and hearing treatment;

Evaluate treatment and revise as necessary;

Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports on student services and progress;

Participate in team and community meetings;

Serve as an IEP team member, determine present levels of performance, and establish goals specifically addressed to student needs;

Use developmentally appropriate activities, a variety of therapy materials, and oral-motor strategies as needed;

Adapt therapy strategies to facilitate student progress, including service delivery methods (services both inside and outside of the classroom);

Consult with other professional and nonprofessional personnel concerning student performance;

Assist with training of classroom staff regarding amplification equipment;

Conduct and participate in seminars, in-service, and professional training programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Set by the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language pathologists under licensing requirements

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

ABA experience, AAC experience

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must possess a current license from the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology. New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have:

Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of speech-language pathology;

Knowledge of the operation and care of equipment used in the practice of speech-language pathology or audiology;

Ability to perform speech, language, and auditory skill evaluations and treatment;

Ability to recognize changes in patients and to revise their treatment program as indicated;

Ability to prepare and deliver reports.

Therapy and assessments should be conducted with the unique D/HOH population in mind.  Considerations of hearing levels and language abilities are essential to meeting the needs of this population.

Applicants must have basic level of sign language and be willing to improve to achieve fluency.

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
