Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of the Speech/Language Pathologist/Audiologist is to serve as a reviewer of all speech/language claims according to the Social Security Administration's regulations. Will evaluate medical reports and consult with the examiner and staff psychiatrists or psychologists. Will provide training to adjudicator on the documentation requirements needed to meet the Federal Regulations that evaluates SSDI claims.

POSITION DUTIES

Reviews speech/language cases and take action on each case within timeframes.  Reviews evidence to establish the existance of severity, onset, duration and remediability of impairments.  Analyzes the sufficency of the evidence to evaluate  disability in accordance with the Social Security Regulations, for speech and language cases.  Prepare written assessment of severity of the impairment and sign the determination. Review consultative examination reports for accuracy, completeness and deficiencies in content.  Make contact with treating sources and consult examiners and the claimants as appropriate, to obtain requisite clinical data, to clarify discrepancies and to convey the presence of finding needing immediate treatment.  Identifies and refers claims requiring further review by staff psychologist/psychiatrist or medical consultant.  Participate in the development of training in speech/language  to ensure adjudicator's  understanding in properly documenting, the speech/language claims.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Set by the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists and the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Audiologists under the licensing requirements.  

EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist.  

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Speech Pathologist and Audiologist classification or Speech Pathologist or Audiologist specialty codes in the Speech Pathology and Audiology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

1. Candidates for positions in this class must possess a current license from the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists or the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Audiologists, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this class must renew their license in accordance with Title 2, Audiology, or Title 19, Speech-Language Pathology, Health Occupations Article, Annotated Code of Maryland.

3. A Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology or Audiology is required. A copy of the current certificate must accompany the application form (MS 100).

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Social Security laws and regulations; Knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of speech-language pathology or audiology; Knowledge of evidence to evaluate disability in accordance with the Social Security Regulations for speech and language cases; Ability to assess impairment severity and describe limitations imposed by impairment; Ability to communicate both orally and in writing; Ability to develop and conduct training;  Ability to establish effective working relationships;  Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Individuals selected for the positions with the Maryland State Department of Education, Disability Determination Services will go through a complete federal background investigation.  A suitable determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records and systems.Any misrepresentation of academic or experience requirements for this position may result in non-selection or termination of employment.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
