Introduction

The Maryland State Archives is recruiting for Summer Internship candidates. Any High school, undergraduate or graduate level college students are eligible to apply.  It is not necessary to be a history major to participate in the program, and students of other disciplines are encouraged to apply.  An academic writing sample to display strong writing ability for content, clarity, and grammar, (copy of a paper written for class is acceptable)

As the historical agency for Maryland, the State Archives is the central depository for government records of permanent value.  Records date from the founding of the Maryland Colony in 1634 to the present day.  The State Archives identifies, appraises, acquires, describes, preserves, and makes physically and electronically available (in a secure and dynamic environment) the permanent records of Maryland’s past, while providing reliable current information to citizens and public officials for the better administration of Maryland government and understanding of Maryland history. 

The Archives describes Maryland state, county, and municipal government agencies, and their origin, functions, structure, personnel, historical evolution, reports, and other aspects of Maryland and its history; and encourages the study of Maryland government and history.  The agency also serves as the custodian of the state's fine art collections.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job

The intern will work on multiple projects under the supervision of the Conservation staff. The intern will work on various projects as they come through the lab including pre scanning treatment such as heat set tissue and simple Japanese repairs on older pieces.

The Intern will also complete tasks for the Library. Book binding, paper repair and book recasing will be taught as needed to finish this project.

In addition, the Intern will also be working with Staff on materials found needing conservation from the Shelf Read beginning with an overall survey of items marked as needing conservation and establishment of efficient methods to treat the documents and objects. This work will include the rehousing of the Blue Box materials throughout the Annapolis building. The materials inside the boxes will also be examined for mold growth; mold that is found will be treated.

POSITION DUTIES

Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week, starting on Wednesday, June 1st through Tuesday, August 9th.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be considered for an internship, you must: Be a current student or recent graduate (within the last year) of high school, undergraduate studies or graduate studies

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The following must be submitted prior to the closing deadline in order to be considered for the internship.  If submissions are missing, the application will be removed from consideration. 

Late submissions will not be accepted. Along with the online application, applicants must submit:

Cover letter- (statement, in the form of a letter explaining how you will benefit from the program and  how  the agency will benefit from your participation)

Academic transcripts, both undergraduate and graduate, if applicable.        

A letter of recommendation from a faculty member from current or most recent school  

Documentation of hand skills: CD or prints of photographs representative of your work; a narrative describing your relevant work; or a detailed list of your relevant work.  This documentation may include, but is not limited to previous conservation work, art work, crafts, needlework, woodwork, etc.
