POSITION DUTIES

If you are an IT professional with a background in Mainframe operating environments, the Comptroller of Maryland has a unique opportunity for you. We are seeking an experienced z/OS Operating System and Storage Management specialist. In this position you will install, administer, and maintain the mainframe computer software at the state's premier data center. You will be relied on for the installation and administration of the mainframe hardware, the z/OS Operating System, and auxiliary storage management using DFHSM and OAM. The implementation of the Disaster Recovery Plan, including offsite storage of backups as well as recovering the system at a remote location, will also be an exciting part of your responsibilities. Located in beautiful downtown historic Annapolis, this position will provide you the chance to be at the forefront of a leading edge mainframe IT environment.

PLEASE NOTE: ITD is responsible for the 24x7x365 support for the ADC mainframe, distributed systems, and networks. All ITD employees are available for on-call support. As such, this position is required to occasionally work an off-hour schedule, weekdays prior to 7:30 a.m. and / or after 5:00 p.m., weekends, and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems or other information technology-related field to include coursework in application, communication, database or operating systems software technology.

Experience: Three years of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining application, communication, database or operating systems software.

NOTES:

  1. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and thirty credit hours from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Management Information Systems or other information technology-related field to include coursework in application, communication, database or operating systems software technology may be substituted for the required education.
  2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and one additional year of experience designing, developing, testing, implementing and maintaining application, communication, database or operating systems software may be substituted for the required education.
  3. Experience operating computer systems; or scheduling, controlling input and output to process data on computer systems; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software; or converting data from project specifications by developing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages may be substituted for high school education on a year- for-year basis.
  4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Computer Systems Operations classifications or Computer Systems Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of JCL problem determination, analysis and corrective procedures for production problems in a large mainframe environment is required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with JCL, TSO, implementing and maintaining programs using COBOL, Assembler, REXX or other generally accepted computer programming languages
  • System maintenance experience with installation and configuration on an MVS Operating System using IBM’s SMP/E software
  • Experience with storage management software products such as IBM’s SMS products and tape management systems such as Computer Associates product CA-1

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Only applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications for this recruitment will be considered for this opportunity. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience. Due to the nature of this list, all qualified applicants are placed on an unranked list of candidates and will remain active on this list for at least one year.  

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
