Main Purpose of Job

Within the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration's (PHPA) mission is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases; helping impacted persons live longer, healthier lives; and protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards. The PHPA works in partnerships with local health departments, providers, community based organizations, and public and private sector agencies to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, and monitoring and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards. This individual will provide epidemiologic and programmatic support for surveillance and special studies of various communicable diseases of interest to the Maryland Emerging Infections Program (EIP), primarily those related to the Healthcare-Associated Infectious Community Interface (HAIC) component of EIP, but for other EIP related activities as well. Responsibilities will include conducting surveillance for specified illnesses and pathogens; refining and analyzing surveillance data; assisting with case and outbreak investigations as needed; developing special studies based on the surveillance activities; writing scientific and other reports; and communicating program information to federal, state, and local stakeholders. Program activities will be conducted in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other EIP sites, and other federal, state, and local partners. These program activities will complement the surveillance and outbreak investigation functions of the DHMH Prevention and Health Promotion Administration's Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau, whose purpose is to prevent and/or reduce the incidence of communicable diseases in Maryland.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.

Experience: None

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science  classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have (a) knowledge of public health surveillance methods; (b) knowledge of microbiologic and molecular laboratory methods; (c) excellent skills using databases and analystic software; and (d) excellent oral and written skills for communicating with internal partners, external partners, and the public.
