Within the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration's (PHPA) mission is to improve the health of Marylanders by reducing the transmission of infectious diseases; helping impacted persons live longer, healthier lives; and protecting individuals and communities from environmental health hazards.

PHPA works in partnership with local health departments, providers, community based organizations, and public and private sector agencies to provide public health leadership in the prevention, control, monitoring and treatment of infectious diseases and environmental health hazards. The individual in this position will provide epidemiologic and programmatic support for influenza activities conducted under the auspices of Maryland's Emerging Infectious Program (EIP). Responsibilities will include conducting active, population based surveillance for laboratory confirmed influenza hospitalizations; developing and implementing influenza-related special studies (e.g. evaluating the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine to prevent hospitalizations); analyzing surveillance data; assisting with DHMH influenza response activities; writing scientific and programmatic reports; communicating information to federal, state and local stakeholders; and other duties as assigned. The individual in this position will routinely travel to hospitals throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan area and surrounding counties for the purpose of conducting on site medical record reviews.

EIP activities will be conducted in collaboration with the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) up to nine others EIP sites, and other federal, state, local and academic partners. These program activities complement the surveillance and outbreak investigation functions of the PHPA's Infectious Diseases Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB), whose purpose is to prevent and/or reduce the incidence, and impact of communicable diseases in Maryland.

Education: A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics. A copy of your graduate transcripts (official or unofficial) must accompany your application.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science  classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required. 

The successful applicant should have (a) knowledge of public health surveillance methods; (b) knowledge of microbiologic and molecular laboratory methods; (c) excellent skills using databases and analytic software; and (d) excellent oral and written skills for communicating with internal partners, external, and the public.
