Main Purpose of Job

To perform insect rearing and conduct field activities in support of plant pest detection and integrated pest management programs in Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

Performs insect rearing using standardized procedures.

Conducts surveys and inspections to support detection and control of injurious pest species.

Conduct field trials to support study and implementation of biological control agents against selected insect and weed pests.

Assist in nursery inspections and plant quarantine activities.

Assist other entomologist, plant disease specialists or regulatory officials in Plant Protection and Weed management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience in one of the following: production, processing, marketing, grading or inspection of agricultural products or chemicals; assisting veterinarians in the care and management of animals; animal disease control; care or management of livestock or inspecting veterinary hospitals, riding stables or livestock dealers; installation, inspection, repair, or testing of weighting, volumetric measuring or counting devices; inspecting labeling and packaging; pesticide sales, use, regulation, or application; production, maintenance or inspection of a tree plantation or nursery stock; pest or weed control; wildlife population censuring; or the production, sales, inspection or testing of seed or turf products.

Note: 

1.    Education at an accredited college or university with courses in agriculture; animal, biological, environmental, food or physical sciences; chemistry; mathematics; engineering, or law enforcement may be substituted at a rate of fifteen credit hours for each year of the required experience for up to two years of experience.  

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience non-commissioned officer in quality assurance, inspection and grading classification or quality assurance, inspection and grading specialty codes in the agricultural commodity grading field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator license’s valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees who are involved in pesticide sales, use, regulation or application or pest survey and control are required to possess and maintain a current Maryland Commercial Applicators Certification within 6 months of being employed.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
