Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
The Maintenance Assistant performs maintenance work, including routine construction work, routine preventive maintenance, and minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, and campus grounds. The employee will perform landscaping duties, repair furniture and wooden structures. The Maintenance Assistant will prep work surfaces for sanding, washing, stripping, painting, waxing, finishing, and staining. Other duties include maintaining and repairing HVAC systems. The Maintenance Assistant will be expected to adhere to an on-call work schedule, which includes assisting other DJS trade professionals with any repair directives that are submitted to the Facility Maintenance Unit.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two years of employment in the Maryland State class of Maintenance Worker III or equivalent level State class.
OR
Education: Completion of the fifth grade.
Experience: Four years’ employment in any combination of two or more of the maintenance trades such as carpentry, electricity, metalwork, welding, painting, plastering, plumbing, air-conditioning, refrigeration, steam fitting, masonry, and the other trowel trades.
Note:
1. Graduation from an accredited vocational-technical high school (e.g. Carver, Merganthaler, Eastern, etc.) may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Must be willing to work outside in inclement weather conditions when needed; such as rain, snow, and hot weather
Must be willing to work in the rural/wilderness environment within the Cumberland, MD. region
Must be willing to adhere to an on-call schedule
