Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service, is currently accepting applications for several Lifeguard positions at State Parks across Maryland. These may include guarding swimming beaches or pools. Lifeguards perform public safety work and are responsible for protecting human life and maintaining order. The selected candidates will patrol and survey swimming areas to prevent swimmers from endangering themselves and/or others. Daily tasks include but are not limited to the following: trains daily to maintain physical standards and rescue skills, staff the Lifeguard and first aid stations, respond to beach/pool area emergencies, enforce beach/pool rules, submit daily beach/pool reports, ensure ready status of rescue equipment, may assist and rescue capsized boaters where applicable, provide information to visitors, advises the general public of park rules and regulations, and other duties as assigned. Lifeguards perform rescue work, promptly render CPR or emergency first aid, promptly report safety hazards to supervisors, and assist in maintaining routine documents or incident reports. The positions may also involve related maintenance and custodial duties, such as the cleanliness of the buildings and grounds at the pool/beach areas. Pool lifeguards are responsible for vacuuming, skimming and routine pool maintenance, and may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure specified water standards.

Note: Applicants must be able to, and be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. The shift hours for this position may vary from park to park. Weekly hours will vary seasonally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.htm.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates at least 16 years of age are preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Current certification as a Lifeguard from an approved agency (such as American Red Cross or YMCA).

Current certification in basic first aid or higher from an approved agency.

Current certification in AED, and adult, infant, and child CPR from an approved agency.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Succesful applicants must pass a swim test and written lifeguard test.
